Unrealised Projects Volume 4:
a considered conclusion to a journey into material
With an intervention introduced by Josh Love, we've attempted to develop several ideas submitted to Volume 4 into material form through a process of practical and speculative discussions with each artist. With the promise to develop the works from 'being' into 'event', we've become experimental producers. Decisive meandering, stuttering momentum, moments of inspiration and conceptual semantics drove a shared goal to discover what the works might say once forced from the page and into form for a one night event at Milton Keynes Gallery during Scratch Nights, Feb. 10, 2011.
Decisive meandering, stuttering momentum, moments of inspiration and conceptual semantics drove a shared goal to discover what the works might say once forced from the page and into form for a one night event.
And the partially productive, partially wasteful, partially circular, partially disruptive distance between intention and realisation will be reflected through a graphic score produced and performed by sound artists Jonny Hill and Edward Simpson on the night of the event. Conceptual impetus, moral rights, production value, intention, time and budget: a multiplicity of motivations driven by an overall process that seems to reflect the messy jumble of factors that determine how a work actually develops and how its legitimacy can be read in the imperfect conditions of its making.
This project is based in time and this is what we know at this moment.Artists in final event:
All initial project ideas have been submitted.
Josh Love approaches Sam and Lynn with proposal to intervene in collection.
May 29. Meeting at auto italia south east to discuss intervention with artists.
Several artists show interest in participating in process, some remain unrealised.
Series of discussions held with each artist over a period of 6 months.
Few of the works are close to a comfortable material resolution.
Expected deadline passes for full development of each work.
Arts Council England funding application is not successful.
More time passes with little to no contact with artists.
May 13. S, L and J meet at Goshka Macuga's 'Nature of the Beast' round table at the Whitechapel gallery for resolution talk to discuss how to move the works forward.
Few tenuous discussions with artists continue, but mostly time just passes.
J defers position as guest curator.
A few artists drop out.
S & L take a long walk to talk.
S & L work with 6 remaining artists to resolve artworks.
Artists works move on substantially.
S & L organise event at Milton Keynes gallery Scratch Nights.
S & L invite sound artists to interpret 'the space between intention and material' to be performed on the night of the event.
Feb 10. Unrealised Projects Volume 4 event at Milton Keynes gallery.
This publication focuses on Volume 4 and is produced on the occasion of the closing event at MK Gallery as part of Scratch Nights. The book is unusually split in two halves to represent two stages of the project that we call 'Being' and 'Event'. Some artists took up the challenge to have their works 'made', others did not.
And we've designed the book in two halves to reflect this relationship.
